3 Ways to Get Your AC Ready for Summer

Monday, May 2nd, 2016

We all know that the summer heat is just around the corner, and it won’t be long until we once more rely on our HVAC system to keep us comfortable. Whether your have a heat pump, air conditioner, or ductless mini split, it’s not going to clean or tune-up itself before the real heat sets in. Now that it’s May, you’ll want to make certain that your cooling system is primed and ready to go whenever you need it. Here are 3 ways to get your AC ready for summer:

  1. Clean air filters. Every forced-air distribution system needs an air filter of some type or another. However, it’s not to remove dust and other debris from the air. It’s to protect your air conditioner components from collecting debris that could be harmful to its operation. Your evaporator coil won’t be able to cool the incoming warm air if it’s covered in dust. And over time, such debris can infiltrate mechanical parts, and disrupt them. Make sure you’ve got clean air filters installed.
  2. The right “charge.” Your air conditioner does not use up refrigerant during operation, but it does require the right amount of refrigerant in order to transfer thermal energy from one place to another. If your refrigerant is too low, then your system will expend more energy for disappointing results. A professional AC maintenance service will measure this amount to see if your system needs to be topped up.
  3. Call for an AC tune-up. If you’re handy, you may already know how to change the air filter in your HVAC system, but the majority of diagnostic, cleaning, and tune-up actions must be completed by a professional if they are to be done accurately. If you haven’t already scheduled air conditioning maintenance, then don’t wait too long. It can keep your system efficient and effective, and may also prevent unnecessary breakdowns.
