3 Unexpected Reasons Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Working

blue-question-markIs your air conditioner simply not working the way it’s supposed to? Or maybe it seems to be working fine, but your recent energy bill tells a different story. If you’re not noticing anything obvious that would lead to your AC’s poor performance, it could be something you’d never expect, such as:

No One Changed the Air Filter

The air filter is one of those things that’s so simple that it’s actually the easiest thing to forget. If you’ve never had the purpose of your air filter explained to you, it can certainly come as a shock to find out that the reason your AC is demonstrating horrible symptoms is simply due to a clogged filter.

The purpose of the air filter is to prevent contaminants from reaching the sensitive components of your AC, such as the evaporator coil. If the air filter becomes too full of dust and dirt, however, it will restrict air flow (and that itself can bring several types of issues).

How often you need to change your air filter depends on a few things, like how many people are in your home, how many pets you own, and the amount of dust and dirt that your home tends to accumulate.

The Refrigerant Wasn’t Charged Properly

Refrigerant leaks are a serious air conditioning issue. Without the perfect amount of refrigerant circulating in the system, your AC’s cooling abilities will be severely compromised. That can bring excessive wear-and-tear and make your energy bill skyrocket. Worst of all, it can cause your compressor to fail, and that’s going to be expensive to fix.

But what if your refrigerant was never charged properly in the first place? It has happened before! If your AC is installed by an amateur (or even a negligent professional), it’s possible that they failed to put enough refrigerant in the system. This will replicate all the same symptoms of a refrigerant leak and force you to call in for air conditioning repair in Salt Lake City.

The Thermostat is Malfunctioning

The thermostat is often taken for granted. When you have an AC problem, you’ll most likely be looking in and around the AC units themselves, but rarely do we think about the thermostat. The reason for this is that the thermostat usually won’t bring you many issues—there are few moving parts inside of them, so not much can go wrong. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Since the thermostat sends commands to the AC, you have to consider if it’s doing its job properly. For example, if placed in the sunlight or too close to the kitchen, the temperature reading can be inaccurate, thus causing your AC to act differently than you intend. In other cases, someone may have bumped into it and damaged it. It’s also possible that it’s stuck on the “fan mode” setting, which would definitely explain why your AC isn’t blowing cool air.

During this very unusual time, we have put a plan in place to do our part to help keep our community safe. First and foremost, we are going to stay CALM, PATIENT, KIND, and POSITIVE!

There is much to consider regarding the COVID-19 virus (Coronavirus) and its possible transmission in your home. While there are various and effective indoor air quality measures available to help protect your safety, including duct sanitization, ultraviolet (UV) germicidal light treatment, and HEPA air filters, they alone cannot protect from all forms of COVID-19 transmission. It is important to follow all official guidelines for preventing the spread of this virus.

Because we have a direct impact on the indoor environment, here are practical steps we are going to take to keep people safe:

  • Wash our hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water
  • Cover our nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing
  • Wash our uniforms every day including cleaning our belts
  • Stay home if we are feeling sick
  • Offer a warm smile and friendly greeting instead of a handshake
  • Wear shoe covers and latex gloves in homes and businesses
  • Wipe down surfaces and equipment touched in a client’s home with disinfectant wipes
  • Wipe down door handles, steering wheels, gear shift lever every day
  • Wipe down pens, clipboards, tablets, cell phones, and anything else passes between techs and clients.
  • We have masks on each truck and will wear them at client’s discretion (Currently the CDC does not recommend that people wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19)
  • We are complying with all recommendations and guidelines from state agencies and will be proactive in our efforts to see that our team members and clients are protected.

As the situation unfolds, we will take each day one at a time and ensure we are being smart, supportive, and helping all those we can in our community.

Thank you for your continued support!
