How to Respond When Your Air Conditioner Shuts Down

No one wants to think about an air conditioner shutting down unexpectedly in the middle of our Holladay, UT summers, but when it happens, you need to have a plan to handle it. It starts with preventative measures like maintenance sessions and judicious use to ensure that the risks of a breakdown are minimal. In the event the unexpected occurs, you can take several steps to keep cool and safe until the repair service gets here, though in some cases, you may be able to fix the trouble before calling a technician.

Check the breaker box to see if the circuit breaker has been flipped, then reset it and see if that solved the problem. You should also check the thermostat to make sure it’s set to the level you want and hasn’t been accidentally shut off. Only after you’ve determined that the problem is more serious should you call in a repair service.

Limit Your Activities

Whenever you open an outside door or window, it lets cold air out of your house and brings warm air in. Bring everyone inside while you wait for the repair service — including pets if possible — and refrain from opening any outside doors or windows if you can help it. Stick to low-energy activities like reading or playing board games, and stay out of the upper stories in your home, where hot air rises and makes for warmer temperatures.

Keep Cool

The biggest way to beat the heat when your air conditioning system is down is to drink plenty of water, iced tea, fruit juice and other light beverages. You should also run fans, wear lightweight clothes, and close the shutters or curtains for windows that let in a lot of sunlight. That will blunt the impact of the heat and help you stay comfortable while you wait for the cavalry to arrive.

At Your Service Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning provides first-rate air conditioning repairs.
